Dubai has announced a major step forward in its sustainability agenda with the launch of the “Green Road Initiative,” a comprehensive urban program designed to dramatically reduce transportation-related carbon emissions. Through this initiative, Dubai aims to cut road-sector emissions by 30% by the year 2030, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible development and aligning with the UAE’s broader Net Zero 2050 vision.
Led by the Dubai Municipality in partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and a range of private-sector collaborators in construction and clean technology, the program focuses on transforming how the city builds and maintains its urban infrastructure. A key part of the plan includes the use of eco-friendly materials in road construction, emphasizing durability, recyclability, and reduced environmental impact. These materials aim to lower emissions generated during the construction process and extend the lifespan of city roads.
Another major component of the initiative is accelerating the transition to electric mobility. Dubai plans to significantly expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network, with a goal of installing more than 1,000 new charging stations across the emirate in the first phase. This move supports growing EV adoption and makes cleaner transportation more accessible to residents and visitors. Complementing this effort, the municipality will gradually convert its own fleet of vehicles to electric models, setting an example for both public institutions and the broader community.
The plan also includes the development of more than 100 kilometers of “green roads” in its initial rollout. These routes will incorporate sustainable construction practices, landscaping that enhances carbon capture, and smart road technologies aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing emissions from idling vehicles.
