Israel’s security cabinet approves 19 new settlements in occupied West Bank

Israel’s security cabinet has approved the establishment of 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, marking the highest pace of approvals in recent years. The decision brings the total number of settlements authorised over the past three years to 69, according to Israeli officials.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the move was intended to strengthen Israel’s presence in the territory, a position widely criticised by the international community. Most global powers consider settlements on land occupied since the 1967 war to be illegal under international law, a view Israel disputes.

The UAE strongly condemned the decision, describing it as a “dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of international law” that undermines prospects for peace. Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia also issued statements opposing the move, warning it further obstructs efforts toward a two-state solution.
