Syria has unveiled a new series of banknotes designed to replace Assad-era currency and support economic recovery after years of conflict. President Ahmad Al Shara and Central Bank Governor Abdulkader Husrieh presented the redesigned notes in Damascus on Monday, with a gradual rollout starting January 1.
The new banknotes abandon portraits of former president Bashar Al Assad and his father, instead featuring images of fruit, crops, animals and plants. Officials say the change reflects a broader effort to redefine national identity following the end of the civil war last December, when rebels toppled the Assad regime.
The move also aims to restore confidence in the Syrian pound, whose purchasing power collapsed to historic lows during the conflict. Mr Al Shara said the designs symbolise a clear break from personality-based rule and signal a fresh economic and political chapter for the country.
