Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to join a US-backed “board of peace” proposed by President Donald Trump, reversing earlier objections raised by his office over the body’s executive composition. The announcement was made on Wednesday as details emerged about the expanding scope of the initiative.
Initially presented as a small forum of global leaders tasked with overseeing a ceasefire in Gaza, the board has since grown in ambition. The Trump camp has extended invitations to dozens of countries and suggested the body could evolve into a broader mechanism for mediating international conflicts beyond the Middle East.
The proposal has drawn concern from diplomats, who warn it could undermine existing multilateral institutions, including the United Nations. When asked whether the board could replace the UN, Mr Trump said: “It might.”
