Abu Dhabi has unveiled an ambitious new marine protection programme, positioning the emirate at the forefront of global ocean conservation. Branded as the World’s Richest Seas initiative, the project aims to safeguard one of the most diverse and resilient marine ecosystems on the planet while balancing environmental preservation with sustainable economic growth.
The initiative focuses on protecting coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and vital fish habitats across Abu Dhabi’s coastal and offshore waters. These ecosystems play a critical role in carbon capture, coastal protection, and food security, while also supporting local fisheries and marine tourism. Authorities highlighted that the waters of Abu Dhabi are home to hundreds of marine species, including endangered turtles, dugongs, and key coral species uniquely adapted to extreme temperatures.
A core pillar of the programme is science-led conservation. Advanced marine mapping, satellite monitoring, and AI-driven data analysis will be used to track biodiversity health, detect environmental threats, and guide policy decisions. The initiative also expands marine protected areas and introduces stricter regulations on overfishing, coastal development, and pollution.
Community and private-sector engagement form another key component. Local fishermen, researchers, schools, and global conservation partners will collaborate through education programmes, sustainable fishing incentives, and long-term research projects.
