Israel’s death penalty law entrenches ‘system of apartheid’ against Palestinians

Arab and Islamic countries have strongly condemned Israel’s newly approved death penalty law targeting Palestinians, warning it could escalate tensions across the region and undermine international law.

Foreign ministers from countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan and Qatar issued a joint statement denouncing the measure as discriminatory and dangerous. They argued the law, which mandates death by hanging for Palestinians convicted in military courts of deadly attacks, creates an unequal legal system.

The ministers also cautioned that the move threatens regional stability at a time of heightened unrest, urging Israel to reconsider the legislation.

Human rights groups and international observers have echoed concerns, highlighting high conviction rates in military courts and warning the law could violate fundamental legal protections and fuel further conflict.
