An attack on Sharif University of Technology in Tehran has damaged a key data centre that served as infrastructure for Iran’s national artificial intelligence platform and thousands of other digital services, according to state media.
The report said the facility was hit overnight during what was described as an attack by the “American-Zionist enemy” on the university.
The data centre supported the country’s national AI platform and provided infrastructure for a wide range of digital services.
State media said the platform is a central hub for artificial intelligence development in the country. In November last year, Iran’s vice president for science said all national AI projects were connected to the system.
It was not immediately clear how extensive the damage was or whether the disruption had affected ongoing AI projects or related services.
