Kuwait has summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires and ordered a reduction in diplomatic staff at the Iranian embassy, while declaring two Iranian diplomats persona non grata and ordering them to leave the country within 24 hours, the Foreign Ministry said today.
Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Sulaiman Al Mashaan delivered an official protest note to Iran’s charge d’affaires, Hamid Hameed Yaqoubi Far, over what Kuwait described as continued Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting the country.
The ministry said attacks resumed on Wednesday morning and targeted civilian and vital facilities, including Kuwait International Airport.
Kuwait said the strikes constituted a flagrant violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the UN Charter, international law and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
Mr Al Mashaan reiterated Kuwait’s condemnation of the attacks and rejected what he described as baseless Iranian allegations used to justify strikes on Kuwaiti territory and civilian infrastructure.
He also stressed that Kuwait reserves the right to defend itself and take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, territory, airspace, citizens and residents, in accordance with international law.
