Israeli warplanes carried out multiple strikes on the Abu Al-Duhur military airfield in Syria’s eastern Idlib countryside early Tuesday, according to Syrian state television. The attack reportedly targeted the runway and storage facilities, causing material damage but no reported casualties.
The strikes mark another escalation in tensions between Israel and Syria following the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s government in December 2024. The Abu Al-Duhur facility had been inactive, but efforts were reportedly under way to rehabilitate the airfield, with Turkish officials recently visiting the site as part of wider support for rebuilding Syria’s military infrastructure.
Syria condemned the attack as a violation of its sovereignty and warned of its potential consequences for regional stability. Türkiye also strongly criticised the strikes, while US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack described the action as an “unnecessary escalation” and expressed deep concern.
Israel has not publicly claimed responsibility for the operation. The latest strikes underscore growing concerns over Syria’s military reconstruction and the increasingly complex security competition involving Israel, Syria and Türkiye.
