Pressure on Iran is intensifying as the United States prepares to announce a new package of economic sanctions aimed at isolating Tehran and restricting its financial relationships with other countries.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to unveil the measures, which Washington has described as among its toughest sanctions yet. The move comes after months of conflict between the United States and Iran, with diplomatic efforts failing to restore a lasting ceasefire or reopen negotiations.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged serious economic difficulties involving water, energy, banking and existing sanctions, but said the country had demonstrated resilience despite mounting pressure. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei meanwhile warned regional countries against joining what Tehran describes as an American “economic war”.

Regional pressure has also increased after the UAE suspended commercial exchanges with Iran. Meanwhile, disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns over global energy supplies, prompting France and Saudi Arabia to examine alternative oil-export routes and pipeline capacity.

The June framework agreement between Washington and Tehran had opened a 60-day window for peace talks, but the ceasefire later collapsed. With negotiations stalled, the latest sanctions could further deepen the economic and geopolitical confrontation.
