Satellite internet is gaining momentum in the UAE, with Elon Musk’s Starlink emerging as the leading provider while several competitors prepare to enter the growing market. Starlink is already operational in the country, offering connectivity through a network of low-Earth-orbit satellites designed to deliver high-speed internet with lower latency than traditional satellite systems.
However, demand has reportedly pushed Starlink’s UAE network to capacity, limiting the number of new customers the service can currently accommodate in individual locations. The company’s global satellite network has substantial overall capacity, but users are distributed across different regions and satellites.
The situation could create opportunities for rival providers, including Amazon’s satellite venture, Amazon Leo, formerly known as Project Kuiper. Other companies are also developing low-Earth-orbit connectivity systems as satellite broadband becomes an increasingly important part of global communications infrastructure.
For the UAE, greater competition could expand connectivity options, particularly for remote locations, businesses and specialised applications, while strengthening the country’s position as a regional hub for advanced communications technology.
