The US Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived at Thailand’s Laem Chabang port on Wednesday, September 2, following an extraordinary 286 consecutive days at sea. The carrier, carrying about 5,000 sailors and Marines, had spent nearly seven months conducting operations in the Middle East before beginning its journey home.
The port visit provides the crew with a long-awaited opportunity for rest and recovery after one of the longest modern US naval deployments. The Lincoln was involved in combat operations during the conflict with Iran and supported maritime operations in the region.
The extended deployment also attracted attention over reported shortages of hygiene supplies, food portions, mail disruptions and maintenance problems aboard the vessel. US officials have highlighted the resilience of the crew and the importance of the Thailand visit.
The visit also underscores the longstanding US-Thailand military partnership, with the carrier strike group now moving into the US 7th Fleet area of operations.
