Treasury sanctions 36 targets for supporting Iran’s aviation sector

The US Treasury Department has announced it is imposing sanctions on 36 targets for supporting Iran’s aviation sector, which the US says the regime uses to move weapons, personnel and illicit cargo.

The department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network also said it is issuing an alert asking financial institutions to report networks supporting Iran’s aviation industry. Additionally, the Office of Foreign Assets Control said it is targeting third-country firms assisting Mahan Air, which is already under US sanctions.

Today’s actions are the latest under “Operation Economic Outcast”, the Trump administration’s latest campaign to isolate Iran financially. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week said the US was looking at airline leasing companies as well as digital assets, in addition to Iran-linked banks.
