US orders Iranian UN delegation to leave as peace talks stall

The United States ordered Iran’s delegation to the United Nations to leave New York after indirect negotiations aimed at ending the conflict reached an impasse, highlighting the continuing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Tehran.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly directed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to depart after the UN General Assembly concluded. A US official said the delegation had “overstayed” its welcome as the diplomatic discussions failed to produce progress.

Iran, however, disputed the US account. Its UN mission said the delegation left New York on September 28 according to a travel schedule communicated to the US State Department on September 17, rejecting claims that it had been expelled.

The dispute comes as Qatar continues to mediate between Washington and Tehran. Iran has proposed steps linked to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations, while the US has maintained pressure over Iran’s nuclear programme and the wider conflict. No breakthrough was reported from the latest talks.

The stalled diplomacy adds uncertainty over efforts to reduce tensions and restore stability around the strategically important Gulf shipping route.
