Abu Dhabi is accelerating its transition toward sustainable urban mobility with a major expansion of its zero-emission bus network, marking a significant step toward the emirate’s long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions and modernizing its public transportation system. The initiative, led by Abu Dhabi Mobility, aims to introduce more electric and hydrogen-powered buses across key routes, positioning the capital as a regional leader in clean transport solutions.
The expansion builds on successful pilot programs conducted over the past year, where electric and hydrogen buses were tested under real-world conditions, including extreme summer temperatures. The results demonstrated strong performance, efficiency, and passenger satisfaction paving the way for wider deployment. The first fully green route, Route 65, now operates exclusively with zero-emission buses, connecting Marina Mall to Al Reem Island. This route is expected to eliminate hundreds of metric tons of carbon emissions annually, contributing directly to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategy.
The new buses come equipped with advanced battery technology, smart cooling systems, and digital mobility features, offering passengers a quieter, smoother, and more environmentally friendly travel experience. The hydrogen-powered buses, in particular, produce only water vapor as emissions, making them ideal for Abu Dhabi’s long-term sustainability plans. The shift also aligns with the emirate’s goal to convert up to 50 percent of its public bus fleet into green vehicles by 2030, with Abu Dhabi Island expected to become a complete “Public Transport Green Zone” by the end of the decade.
Supporting infrastructure is being expanded in parallel. New electric charging stations and hydrogen refueling facilities are being installed at major transport hubs and depots, ensuring the operational reliability of the growing fleet. These facilities are integrated with smart monitoring systems that track energy usage, vehicle performance, and route efficiency in real time. This data-driven approach will allow Abu Dhabi Mobility to optimize routes, reduce operational costs, and enhance the overall commuting experience.
Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative is expected to play a crucial role in shifting more residents and visitors from private cars to public transportation. With modern interiors, improved accessibility, and real-time digital route information, the zero-emission buses provide a compelling, comfortable alternative for daily commuters. Authorities believe that by improving public transport quality, congestion on major roads can be significantly reduced over time.
The expansion also strengthens Abu Dhabi’s global reputation as a forward-thinking city committed to sustainable innovation. It complements other major green mobility projects, including autonomous vehicle trials, upgraded cycling paths, and efforts to integrate multiple transportation modes into a unified, efficient network.
As more zero-emission buses roll out over the coming months, Abu Dhabi’s public transportation system is set to undergo its most substantial transformation in decades. The initiative not only advances the emirate’s environmental goals but also enhances its urban livability, making clean, efficient, and accessible public mobility a core pillar of its future development.
