American freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson has been kidnapped in Baghdad, Iraq, prompting urgent international concern and a joint response from U.S. and Iraqi authorities.

Kittleson, a seasoned reporter who has contributed to outlets such as the BBC, Politico, and Al-Monitor, was abducted on March 31 by armed men in central Baghdad. Officials say she was forced into a vehicle, with surveillance footage reportedly capturing the incident.

Iraqi security forces have launched a major operation, arresting at least one suspect and seizing a vehicle linked to the kidnapping, while others remain at large.

U.S. officials believe an Iran-linked militia may be involved, though no group has claimed responsibility. Kittleson had reportedly been warned of threats before traveling to Iraq.

Authorities continue efforts to secure her safe release.
