An Abu Dhabi summit featuring Bill Gates and UAE Minister of State for International Co-operation Reem Al Hashimy issued an urgent warning that 200,000 additional child deaths could occur this year unless rapid action is taken. Speaking at the Goalkeepers Abu Dhabi event, they said global progress on child survival is reversing for the first time this century, with mortality projected to hit 4.8 million. Ms Al Hashimy stressed the need for simultaneous humanitarian, development and political efforts. The call came as President Sheikh Mohamed directed $550 million towards the UN’s 2026 humanitarian appeal. Mr Gates highlighted innovation in maternal care, nutrition and AI health tools as critical, praising UAE-backed initiatives targeting malnutrition.
