First Meeting of Gaza’s Interim Government Delayed Over Membership Dispute

The first meeting of the Palestinian interim committee set to oversee day-to-day governance in Gaza has been postponed due to disagreements over the appointment of two members, sources told The National. The dispute centres on candidates Sami Nasman, a former Palestinian Authority intelligence officer, and Rami Halas, proposed for religious affairs and endowments.

The technocratic committee, part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, was scheduled to convene in Cairo with representatives from the U.S., Egypt and Turkey to outline its mandate and priorities.

Some members remain in Gaza due to security and logistical constraints, further delaying the meeting. The body, expected to be led by Ali Shaath, excludes Hamas members and requires vetting by both the U.S. and Israel.

The postponement highlights continuing challenges in implementing the transitional governance framework amid unresolved regional tensions and security concerns.
