The US expects to receive Iran’s response to its proposal to end the war today, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters in Rome.

“We’ll see what the response entails. The hope is it’s something that can put us ‌into a serious process of negotiation,” Mr ‌Rubio said.

His remarks come after the US military said it intercepted “unprovoked Iranian attacks” as its naval vessels were crossing the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, prompting retaliatory strikes on Iranian military bases used to attack US interests.

The US proposal includes “declaring an end to the war and the start of a 30-day period of negotiations on a detailed agreement to open the strait, limit Iran’s nuclear programme and lift US sanctions”, according to Axios

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said yesterday that the proposal was “still under review” and that “once we finalise our position, we will share it with Pakistan,” Iranian media reported.
