Iraq and Jordan are expected to join US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Gulf officials in New York this week, as Arab and US diplomacy intensifies during the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level session. Egypt is also likely to participate in the discussions.
The talks are expected to focus heavily on the ongoing US-Iran conflict, Iran’s regional alliances and the security implications of escalating tensions across the Middle East. The expanding presence of Houthi forces around the strategic Bab Al Mandeb Strait and recent attacks targeting Saudi Arabia are also expected to feature prominently.
UAE diplomatic adviser Dr Anwar Gargash called for a “new mindset” in relations with Iran, arguing that regional security and stability should be addressed through direct Arab-Iranian dialogue as well as US-Iran discussions.
The meeting comes as Washington prepares for further diplomatic engagements during UNGA week. Reuters reported that Trump’s schedule includes meetings with Gulf leaders and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, with the Iran conflict and regional security expected to remain central issues.
