Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi will travel to Tehran on Tuesday for talks with Iranian officials focused on security and navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as tensions continue to threaten regional shipping.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed the visit, saying Mr Albusaidi will meet his Iranian counterpart to discuss the security of the strait and its shipping lanes. The talks come as Tehran and Muscat intensify diplomatic efforts to establish a workable framework for maritime movement.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, connecting the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and wider international markets. Any prolonged disruption could affect oil supplies, shipping costs and global energy prices.
The diplomatic push comes amid growing tensions between Iran and the United States. Tehran has warned of a strong response to Washington’s expected new sanctions, while shipping activity through Hormuz remains under pressure.
Oman has maintained channels of communication with Iran and has frequently played a mediation role in regional disputes. The foreign minister’s visit could therefore provide an important diplomatic avenue for reducing tensions and improving maritime security.
The talks will be closely watched by Gulf states, shipping companies and global energy markets, with hopes that a negotiated mechanism can help restore safer and more predictable navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
