Saudi Arabia Launches HMS King Saud, Marking New Naval Era

1 Min Read

Saudi Arabia has launched HMS King Saud, the first combat vessel built under the Tuwaiq naval modernisation programme, signalling a major step in upgrading the Kingdom’s maritime capabilities. The ceremony was held in Wisconsin, USA, and attended by Lt Gen Mohammed Al Ghuraibi, Chief of Saudi Naval Staff, alongside senior Saudi and US officials.

The Tuwaiq Project will deliver four advanced multi-mission combat ships designed to counter aerial, surface and subsurface threats. Saudi officials say the programme strengthens operational readiness, secures key maritime routes and supports long-term naval efficiency through upgraded training and maintenance facilities at King Abdulaziz Naval Base in Jubail. The initiative aligns with Vision 2030, reinforcing Saudi-US defence cooperation and localisation of military industries.
