WASHINGTON — A new study published in the journal Ambio suggests that NASA should build a secure biocontainment facility on the Moon to quarantine extraterrestrial samples before bringing them to Earth.
Researchers Frederick I. Moxley and Anthony Ricciardi argue that as space agencies advance plans to retrieve rock, soil, and ice samples from Mars and other distant worlds, the Moon offers a practical balance of isolation and proximity. Testing materials in a specialized lunar laboratory would significantly reduce the risk of contaminating Earth’s biosphere with unknown microorganisms or biologically active molecules.
While scientists emphasize there is currently no evidence of alien life, the proposal advocates for strict planetary protection measures. This protocol would also mitigate the risk of “rebound contamination,” where mutated Earth microbes return home. Integrating this advanced quarantine center into future human lunar settlements could safely shield Earth from highly unlikely but unpredictable biological risks.
