Authorities across the UAE have issued a red-alert travel advisory after dense fog blanketed several parts of the country, significantly reducing visibility and disrupting early morning traffic. Major highways, including key routes in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, witnessed slow-moving congestion as motorists struggled with near-zero visibility conditions.
Police and civil defence departments urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, advising reduced speeds, use of fog lights, and maintaining safe distances between vehicles. In several areas, warning alerts were sent directly to motorists’ phones, while electronic road signs displayed reduced speed limits to minimize the risk of accidents. Emergency services remained on high alert to respond swiftly to any incidents caused by the hazardous conditions.
The fog, which formed due to high humidity levels combined with cooler overnight temperatures, is a recurring winter phenomenon in the UAE. Meteorological officials explained that calm winds and moisture in the air allowed fog to thicken rapidly, particularly in low-lying and coastal regions. Visibility in some locations reportedly dropped to less than 100 metres, prompting temporary restrictions on heavy vehicles in affected zones.
Airports monitored conditions closely, with minor delays reported on select early morning flights, though operations largely continued as normal. Authorities emphasized that travelers should check traffic updates and weather advisories before setting out, especially during early hours.
Residents have been reminded that safety remains the top priority during such weather events. Officials stressed that adherence to traffic regulations, avoiding sudden lane changes, and postponing non-essential travel where possible can help prevent accidents until visibility improves and conditions stabilize across the country.
