WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House on November 10, marking the first visit by a Syrian head of state since the country’s independence from France in 1946.
The meeting follows the U.S. decision to lift long-standing sanctions on Syria after al-Sharaa led forces that overthrew Bashar Assad’s regime last year. Officials say the talks aim to formalize Syria’s entry into a U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the visit as part of Trump’s broader diplomatic outreach “in the pursuit of peace.” The closed-door session signals a remarkable shift in U.S.-Syria relations, with both sides seeking stability and cooperation against extremist threats in the region.
