Trump says ‘number-one goal’ is preventing Iran from having nuclear weapons

US President Donald Trump has said preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains his administration’s chief objective.

“The number one goal is, and always will be, that Iran cannot have, in any way, shape, or form, a nuclear weapon,” Mr Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

His comments come as an agreement aimed at ending fighting between the US and Iran expired today, with little sign that either side is willing to extend the accord, which both sides have accused the other of violating for weeks.

The agreement was signed on June 17 by Mr Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian after talks hosted by Pakistan.
