The UAE has condemned a deadly Iranian attack on a Saudi supertanker, saying the strike constituted a “grave threat” to international navigation.
Saudi shipping company Bahri said two Filipino crew members were killed in an attack on its vessel, the Sidr, in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
In a statement, the UAE Foreign Ministry expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and “full support for all measures” protecting its vessels, national interests and freedom of navigation in regional and international waters.
The UAE called the attack a “flagrant violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which affirms freedom of navigation and rejects attacks targeting commercial vessels or maritime routes.
The ministry warned that targeting commercial shipping and exploiting the strait as a means of “economic coercion or blackmail” were unacceptable and threatened regional stability.
It said such attacks directly threaten “global energy security” and international trade flows, amid heightened tensions surrounding shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
