The United Arab Emirates has announced a landmark $1 billion “AI for Development” initiative aimed at accelerating digital transformation and artificial intelligence adoption across African nations. The initiative was unveiled during high-level discussions at the G20 Summit in South Africa, where UAE and African leaders reaffirmed a shared commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable economic growth.
The announcement highlights the UAE’s increasing role as a global supporter of innovation-led development, particularly in emerging markets where technology infrastructure is rapidly expanding but still faces significant gaps. The new fund will focus on providing financing, expertise, and technological resources to help African countries integrate AI into key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, logistics, finance, and public services.
