UAE nuclear regulator wins international AI innovation award

The UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has won the 2026 Innovation Award in the Artificial Intelligence category from the International Network on Innovation to Support Operating Nuclear Power Plants (ISOP), established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The award was presented during the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

The recognition honours FANR’s Intelligent Operational Nuclear Safety (IONS) system, an advanced platform that uses artificial intelligence, satellite data, machine learning and geospatial analysis to strengthen nuclear safety oversight.

Developed in collaboration with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, IONS provides near-real-time information about environmental conditions surrounding the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. The system monitors indicators including sea levels, land and sea-surface temperatures, vegetation health, air quality and seismic activity.

Its AI capabilities can also help develop models of expected future climate conditions, supporting the identification and management of potential environmental and climate-related risks. The system was launched in July 2024 as part of FANR’s efforts to use advanced technologies to strengthen regulatory effectiveness.

The IAEA said the ISOP awards recognise innovations that have moved beyond concepts and demonstrations and are delivering practical benefits in the nuclear sector. The 2026 awards attracted submissions from organisations around the world.

The international recognition highlights the UAE’s growing capabilities in combining artificial intelligence, space technology and nuclear regulation. It also demonstrates the country’s focus on using advanced technologies to strengthen safety, resilience and environmental monitoring.

FANR’s achievement further supports the UAE’s vision of becoming a global leader in responsible AI innovation and advanced nuclear technology, while contributing practical expertise to international efforts to enhance nuclear safety.
