The GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) has officially launched a massive electrical expansion project to link the UAE and Saudi Arabia, backed by a US $205 million (AED 752 million) investment from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).

The project features a new 96-kilometer, 400 kV high-voltage transmission line connecting the Al Silaa substation in the UAE to the Salwa substation in Saudi Arabia. This critical infrastructure will boost power transmission capacity by 1,100 megawatts, raising the total to 3,500 MW.

For residents and businesses, this interconnection promises enhanced grid stability and potential reductions in electricity tariffs by enabling efficient cross-border energy trading. It also facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources, directly supporting the region’s long-term sustainability goals.
