US-sanctioned tanker passes through Strait of Hormuz despite blockade

A US-sanctioned tanker has successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz despite an ongoing American naval blockade, raising fresh concerns over enforcement and regional stability.

Shipping data showed that the Chinese-owned tanker Rich Starry, previously sanctioned for links to Iranian oil trade, passed through the critical waterway carrying about 250,000 barrels of methanol loaded in the UAE. It became the first sanctioned vessel to exit the Gulf since the blockade began.

The blockade, imposed after failed US-Iran talks, targets ships linked to Iranian ports but allows transit for vessels bound elsewhere. Analysts say this loophole may explain how the tanker crossed without interception.

Another sanctioned vessel is reportedly heading into the strait, highlighting ongoing challenges in enforcing restrictions and maintaining control over one of the world’s most vital energy routes.
