In Nayrb, a small Syrian town scarred by years of civil war, news of Ahmed Al Ahmed’s bravery in Sydney has been received with deep pride. Family members told The National that footage of him disarming a gunman on Bondi Beach felt intensely personal for a community shaped by conflict and loss.
Born in Nayrb in 1981, Mr Al Ahmed emigrated to Australia in 2006, before the war devastated Idlib province and destroyed his family home. Relatives say his instinctive act reflects a life shaped by hardship, courage and survival, values forged long before he left Syria.
