Gaza militia commander Yasser Abu Shabab, a prominent figure opposing Hamas in the enclave, was shot dead while attempting to mediate a family dispute, his group confirmed on Thursday. The Abu Shabab Popular Forces said he was killed “in the field” during efforts to resolve tensions within the Abu Sanima family. The militia rejected claims that remnants of Hamas were behind the incident.

Abu Shabab’s faction, which has previously co-ordinated with Israel against Hamas, vowed to continue its campaign to eliminate militant elements and restore stability in Rafah. In a statement, the group said it remained committed to “building a secure future for people who believe in peace” despite the loss of its leader.
