The Royal Navy is exploring the use of civilian vessels to support minehunting drone operations in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as tensions in the region continue to escalate. The move comes amid concerns over threats posed by Iranian mines, drones, and missile activity disrupting global shipping routes.
Officials are considering adapting commercial ships to act as “motherships” for autonomous systems, including underwater drones designed to detect and neutralise mines. This approach would reduce reliance on traditional warships while expanding operational flexibility.
The initiative complements plans to equip vessels like RFA Lyme Bay with advanced drone technology, forming part of broader UK and allied efforts to secure maritime trade routes and restore safe passage through the critical oil corridor.
