The Swiss government said on Wednesday it would deploy up to 2,000 military personnel and impose temporary airspace restrictions around Bürgenstock ahead of a planned signing ceremony for the US-Iran memorandum of understanding on June 19.
The Federal Council said it had approved a support mission for the Swiss army to assist civilian authorities in securing the meeting, where senior representatives of the United States and Iran are expected to formally sign the agreement reached last weekend to end military operations between the two countries.
According to the Swiss government, high-level representatives from Pakistan and Qatar are also expected to attend the ceremony.
The army will support cantonal police in the areas of site protection, surveillance, reconnaissance, transport and logistics.
The Federal Council also approved a temporary closure of airspace within a 46-kilometre radius of Bürgenstock, saying the measure was necessary to ensure security for internationally protected persons attending the event.
Switzerland’s air force will provide enhanced airspace surveillance and air-policing operations during the meeting.
