Dubai is set to improve connectivity between Sharjah and Dubai with the opening of two new lanes on a five-kilometre stretch of Emirates Road on August 30.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will add the lanes for traffic travelling from Sharjah towards the Wadi Al Amardi area, increasing the road from six to eight lanes. The expansion is designed to provide motorists with smoother and more efficient journeys, particularly during busy periods.
The upgrade will increase the road’s capacity from around 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour — an increase of about 33 per cent. RTA expects the improvement to reduce journey times by up to 25 per cent during peak hours.
The timing is especially important as traffic between Sharjah and Dubai is expected to rise with schools reopening and daily commuting returning to normal levels. Emirates Road already handles more than 240,000 vehicles in both directions every day, making it one of the UAE’s key transport corridors.
The project forms part of Dubai’s broader programme to strengthen its road network and prepare infrastructure for continued population and urban growth. The RTA said the improvements are based on traffic studies and are intended to support safer, more sustainable and reliable mobility between Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
The latest expansion adds to several recent road improvements across Dubai, reflecting the emirate’s continued investment in modern transport infrastructure and its focus on making everyday travel faster and more convenient for residents, visitors and businesses.
