Global private markets investment firm EQT has launched its new Middle East platform and opened an office at Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), establishing its first on-the-ground presence in the Gulf region. EQT manages approximately US$389 billion in assets globally.

The Abu Dhabi office will serve as a strategic base for EQT as it expands its presence across the GCC, strengthens relationships with regional investors and companies, and explores new investment opportunities. The firm said ADGM’s regulatory framework, financial ecosystem and international connectivity were key factors behind its decision to establish the regional platform in Abu Dhabi.

EQT’s Middle East platform will initially bring together professionals focused on Private Capital and Infrastructure, supported by teams working in capital raising and business operations. The platform will also draw on EQT’s global Real Estate and Secondaries capabilities as opportunities develop.

The regional operation is led by Jimmy Mahtani, appointed Chairman of GCC, while Smiyet Belrhiti will lead the Abu Dhabi office as Head of Middle East and Senior Executive Officer.

EQT already has several portfolio companies with established operations in the region, including Nord Anglia Education, Virtusa, Banking Circle, Nothing and SAUR. The new platform will enable the firm to work more closely with these businesses while supporting their continued expansion across GCC markets.

The launch further adds to Abu Dhabi’s growing international investment ecosystem. With the new office, EQT now has operations in more than 25 countries, collectively representing over 80% of global GDP. The firm said its Middle East strategy will focus on sectors undergoing structural transformation, including technology, digital and AI infrastructure, healthcare, education, industrials, infrastructure and energy transition.
