Pope Leo XIV has urged European leaders to show greater flexibility in negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, calling for a willingness to give up some positions for the wider goal of peace. Speaking in Metz, France, on Monday, the Pope said Europe must pursue patient dialogue and demonstrate courage in negotiations.
His remarks came as diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine remain stalled. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump in New York last week to discuss efforts to end the conflict, but neither Russia nor Ukraine has indicated a willingness to surrender territory.
Pope Leo also cautioned against viewing increased military spending and rearmament as the primary answer to Europe’s security concerns. He said the search for peace should involve constructive efforts, international law and multilateral dialogue rather than simply preparing for future conflicts.
During his four-day visit to France, the Pope also addressed migration, urging European countries to integrate migrants and uphold human dignity. His comments came alongside a broader appeal for European unity, respect for the rule of law and peaceful cooperation.
