Germany is preparing for the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops after Washington announced plans to reduce its military presence amid growing tensions with European allies over the Iran war. The Pentagon said the move followed a review of force posture in Europe and would be completed within six to twelve months.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the decision was expected and stressed that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security. He added that continued US forces in Europe remained in the interests of both sides.
Germany hosts about 35,000 American troops and serves as Washington’s largest military hub in Europe. Reports said a brigade combat team would leave Germany, while a planned long-range fires battalion deployment has been cancelled. Nato said it is seeking further details from the US administration on the troop reduction plan.
