STARMER APPOINTS DAN JARVIS AS UK DEFENCE SECRETARY AMID POLITICAL TURMOIL

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed Dan Jarvis as the country’s new Defence Secretary following the resignation of John Healey in a dispute over military spending plans. The move comes after a shock rebellion within the government that has intensified pressure on Starmer’s leadership.

Healey stepped down after criticizing the government’s Defence Investment Plan, arguing that proposed funding increases were insufficient to address growing security threats. Shortly afterward, Armed Forces Minister Al Carns also resigned, deepening the crisis within the defence establishment.

Jarvis, a former Army officer and security minister, now faces the challenge of steering UK defence policy while helping finalize the delayed investment plan ahead of next month’s NATO summit. Starmer has defended the government’s approach, insisting it represents a major long-term increase in defence spending while maintaining fiscal discipline.

The reshuffle marks one of the most significant tests of Starmer’s premiership, with opposition figures and some Labour members questioning the government’s commitment to national security and military readiness.
