Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has died at the age of 47 after spending more than three years in a coma, according to an announcement from the Royal Household Bureau.

The princess was hospitalized in December 2022 after collapsing from a severe heart condition while visiting northeastern Thailand. Despite intensive medical treatment and life-support measures, her condition deteriorated over the years due to multiple complications, including infections and organ-related health issues.

Known as “Princess Pa,” Bajrakitiyabha was one of the most respected members of Thailand’s royal family. A trained lawyer and diplomat, she served as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria and worked extensively on legal reform, women’s rights, and prisoner rehabilitation programs. She was also recognized internationally for her humanitarian work and advocacy for female inmates.

Her death has prompted nationwide mourning and renewed attention to questions surrounding Thailand’s royal succession. Funeral rites will be conducted with full royal honors in Bangkok.
