US President Donald Trump said Israel had agreed not to send troops into Beirut and Hezbollah had committed to halting attacks on Israel after talks mediated by American officials.

In a post on Truth Social, Mr Trump said he had held a “very productive” call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and that any Israeli forces heading towards the Lebanese capital had been ordered to return.

“There will be no troops going to Beirut, and any troops that are on their way have already been turned back,” Mr Trump wrote.

Israel has not announced any movement of ground forces towards Beirut. It had warned it could resume air strikes on the southern suburbs of the capital, which it regards as a Hezbollah stronghold.

Mr Trump also said US representatives had spoken to Hezbollah and secured a commitment to end hostilities.

“Israel will not attack them and they will not attack Israel,” he said.
